What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is part of the holistic system of Traditional Chinese Medicine  (TCM) which views health as a constantly changing flow of energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”).  It is one of the oldest, and most commonly used medical procedures in the world.  Orginating in China more than 5,000 years ago acupuncture began to become known in the United States in 1971.  In Chinese medical theory a part can only be understood in its relation to the whole.  TCM theorizes that there are more than 2000 acupuncture points on the human body and these points connect with 12 main and eight secondary pathways in the body called meridians.  These pathways or meridians conduct energy or qi throughout the body.  Imbalances in this natural flow of energy in the body result in disease and dysfunction.  Acupuncture aims to restore health by balancing and improving the flow of qi.

What Conditions can Acupuncture Treat?

More than 200 clinical conditions have been recognized by the World Health Organization as appropriate for treatment by acupuncture.  Acupuncture is used for preventative health care and maintenance care.  Listed below are a few of the conditions that can be treated by acupuncture:

What can I expect on my first visit and follow-up appointments?

As with chiropractic, we set aside an hour for new acupuncture patients. Prior to your appointment, you will be asked to complete a comprehensive health history, which will be reviewed thoroughly by Dr. Ray. Pulse evaluation, tongue assessment and other physical tests may be performed to evaluate your condition. If you are a candidate for acupuncture, a treatment will be given during the session.
Follow-up treatments typically last 30 to 45 minutes. (top)

How much care will I need?

The more chronic the problem the longer it may take to resolve. Generally, a series of 4-8 treatments may be necessary to effectively treat the condition. It is important for you to discuss your objectives with Dr. Ray in order to develop a treatment plan that works best for you. (top)
