What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the most common procedure performed by a doctor of chiropractic. The adjustment is used to restore normal mobility by manually applying a controlled force with one’s hands or an adjusting instrument. The force is applied to the joints that have become restricted due to issues like poor posture, injury or stress. The chiropractic adjustment of the joint and affected tissues restores normal mobility and nerve communication. This procedure alleviates pain and muscle tightness and allows the tissues to heal.(top)

Education for Chiropractors

Chiropractic doctors must complete a minimum of two years of university study in pre-med sciences followed by four years at an accredited chiropractic college.  The curriculum is similar to that of medical school, except in chiropractic the emphasis is placed on the structural and functional analysis of the spine/extremities and corrective adjusting techniques.  Medical school emphasizes the analysis of body chemistry and pharmaceutical intervention.  Chiropractic education includes training in the medical sciences and has more hours of training in anatomy, physiology and diagnosis.  The chiropractic doctor in the state of Colorado must pass national board exams to be eligible for state board examinations.  State board exams include both written examination and oral practical exams involving clinical practice and x-ray interpretation. Is chiropractic SafeWhat causes back pain?

Causes of back pain are variable and can include:

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is low back pain combined with a pain through the buttock and down one leg. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from your pelvis, through your hip area and buttocks and down each leg. The sciatic nerve branches into smaller nerves as it travels down the legs providing feeling to your thighs, legs, and feet as well as controlling many of the muscles in your lower legs. The term sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of this nerve.(top)

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The carpal tunnel (a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bone at the base of the hand) forms a passage way for median nerve. When the nerve is compressed repetitively or for prolonged periods of time; pain, weakness, or numbness may occur in the hand and wrist radiating pain and discomfort up into the arm. Carpal tunnel syndrome is especially common in those who perform repetitive motions of the hands and wrist without proper posture or ergonomics, and without proper stretching and care for the hand. Chiropractic adjustments, massage, stretching and proper exercises of the hand can cure carpal tunnel syndrome.(top)

The techniques used for babies are very different than those used for adults, and can be very effective in the treatment of colic, feeding problems and sleeping problems. Identifying and treating spinal or joint problems in children early on can prevent further health problems later in their life. Chiropractic and holistic care have also treated children successfully for problems such as asthma and breathing difficulties, bedwetting, and hyperactivity. (top)

What can I expect on my first visit and follow-up appointments?

At Red Dragon Wellness we set aside an hour for new patients. Prior to your appointment, you will be asked to complete a comprehensive health history and it will be reviewed thoroughly by Dr. Ray. She will perform a physical exam (including orthopedic and neurologic tests) and will provide a brief report of findings on your condition. If appropriate, an initial treatment will be given. If further tests (x-ray, MRI, or lab) are needed, or follow- up with other practitioners is applicable, those recommendations will be made.

A program of care can be designed and customized to your specific needs.
In addition to the chiropractic adjustment, you may receive physiotherapies such as rehabilitative exercises, electric muscle stimulation and hot or cold therapies. If the patient is a candidate for acupuncture, acupuncture may also be utilized.

Dr. Ray may also recommend changes to your lifestyle, work environment, diet and exercise patterns.
Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes or less. You will be re-assessed at every visit and treated accordingly. Different techniques may be used for new conditions. (top)
